What is a Windload or Wind Rated Garage Door?

Windload Garage Door Installed by Element Doors in Houston, Texas

A Windload-rated garage door is a door specifically engineered and reinforced to withstand the intense internal and external pressures caused by high-velocity winds.

Unlike a standard garage door, which can buckle or be "blown in" during a severe storm, a windload door is built with:

  • Reinforced Struts: Heavy-duty steel bars (often 22-gauge or thicker) run horizontally across the back of the door panels to prevent them from bending.

  • Heavy-Duty Hardware: Thick 14-gauge tracks and reinforced rollers ensure the door stays securely inside its frame even when the wind is pulling at it.

  • High-Pressure Ratings: These doors are tested to withstand specific "pounds per square foot" (PSF) of pressure, both positive (pushing in) and negative (suction pulling out).

Why Itโ€™s Not Optional for Some Houston Homeowners

In many parts of the Houston surrounding areas, windload doors are a legal requirement. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) and local building codes mandate specific windload ratings based on your distance from the coast.

  • The "Pressure Cooker" Effect: If a standard garage door fails during a hurricane, the sudden rush of air into the garage can create an internal pressure surge so strong it can actually lift the roof off your house..

  • Insurance Savings: In many cases, installing a TDI-certified windload door can lead to significant discounts on your windstorm insurance premiums.

Does Your Area Require It?

If you live in Harris, Brazoria, Galveston, or Chambers counties, or in cities like Katy, Pearland, or League City, your home is likely subject to specific windstorm codes. Depending on your exact "wind zone," your door may need to be rated for 110 MPH to 150 MPH winds.

Don't Wait for the Next Big Storm

Is your current garage door "Windstorm Certified"? If you aren't sure, itโ€™s worth a check. Many older homes in our area have "builder-grade" doors that offer practically no protection against a Category 3 hurricane.

At Element Doors and Garages, we specialize in TDI-compliant installations. We can help by providing smooth and expert installation with the certification you need for your insurance provider.
